Degree description
Technical Communication (Social Media Management), BS degree description
Technical communication entails communicating with, about and on technology. Social media is a rapidly developing aspect of the technology landscape. In the social media management concentration in the Bachelor of Science program in technical communication, you focus on the management, history, theory, culture, practice and ethics of social media.
While the technical communication major gives you a wide look at how professional technical communicators do many types of work inside and outside organizations, this concentration homes in on social media creation as a specific type of technical communication work. You learn the practical aspects of social media creation alongside the history, legal concepts, ethical ideas and current concerns that shape and inform that practice. You also learn about existing and emerging social media in ways that enable you to adapt and thrive in the constantly changing social media environment.
Why specialize in technical communication and social media management at ASU?
Many universities spread social media skills across separate departments, with content creation and digital content strategy in one place, business strategy in another, and crisis management somewhere else. This concentration through the College of Integrative Sciences and Arts pulls those pieces into one degree, so you gain well-rounded expertise that can be hard to find elsewhere.
Social media is a large and fast-growing field, yet many job applicants are self-taught. Rather than a single course, this social media management concentration gives you a genuine credential in technical communication, which helps you stand out to employers who want proven ability.
Social media also raises real questions about ethics, privacy, misinformation and community impact. Here you learn to face those challenges head-on and to help people and organizations communicate more responsibly in the digital spaces that shape daily life.
