User Experience degree description
In the Bachelor of Science program in user experience, you focus on users' interactions with a company or organization, including its products and services. The UX elements of psychology, research, design and communication determine user needs and wants when they're using a product. Research drives design, design drives content, and content drives communication --- all result in a user experience.
You learn the UX research, design, content development, communication and tone of voice elements and skills needed to successfully evaluate all components and products that end users interact with. Topics covered include:
- hardware and software user interfaces
- help systems
- identification of user needs
- informational products
- interacting with print, digital and aural information
- tasks, procedures, capabilities and limitations of using technology
- user support
Why study user experience at ASU?
This user experience bachelor's degree program at ASU is a collaboration between three areas: human systems engineering, graphic information technology, and technical writing and communication. That structure gives you an interdisciplinary education that few other programs offer. Other programs prepare you for just one of these areas. This degree takes a holistic approach so you build skills across research, design and communication rather than in one narrow track.
The coursework is highly project-based, so you develop practical skills you can apply directly in industry. You evaluate the components and products that end users interact with, such as hardware and software interfaces, help systems and user support.

Beyond your courses, you can join the Brown Bag Series, where guest speakers from the industry cover research and professional development topics both online and in person. The program also schedules meetups, talks and labs throughout the year.
You also have access to CRUX, the communication research and user experience labs, along with other research labs.

As a high-achieving student, accelerated bachelor's plus master's degree programs are designed for you to share undergraduate coursework with graduate coursework to accelerate completion of your master's degree. Approval to pursue the accelerated master's is typically granted during the junior year of your bachelor's degree program. If you are interested, you can learn more about eligibility requirements and how to apply.
When you pursue concurrent degrees (also known as a “double major”), you earn two distinct degrees and receive two diplomas. Working with your academic advisor, you can create your own concurrent degree combination. Some combinations are not possible due to high levels of overlap in curriculum.
Those who study abroad while learning user experience have an advantage in many workplaces. Understanding the global view of applied workplace communication, students become well-rounded communicators who can use various print and digital information products to convey technical and specialized information. Through participation in one of the more than 300 available Global Education programs, students expand their scope of learning beyond the classroom and gain hands-on experience in different and exciting cultures.

Frequently asked questions about degree programs
Accelerated programs allow students the opportunity to expedite the completion of their degree.
Accelerated master's
These programs allow students to accelerate their studies to earn a bachelor's plus a master's degree in as few as five years (for some programs).
Each program has requirements students must meet to be eligible for consideration. Students typically receive approval to pursue the accelerated master's during the junior year of their bachelor's degree program. Interested students can learn about eligibility requirements and how to apply.
Concurrent degrees allow students to pursue their own personal or professional interests, earn two distinct degrees and receive two diplomas. To add a concurrent degree to your existing degree, work with your academic advisor.
Joint programs, or jointly conferred degrees, are offered by more than one college and provide opportunities for students to take advantage of the academic strengths of two academic units. Upon graduation, students are awarded one degree and one diploma conferred by two colleges.
