Develop knowledge and skills in an emerging field that optimizes health using an understanding of the complex systems of public health and health care delivery --- two educational domains central to ASU's College of Health Solutions.
In the Bachelor of Science program in population health, you learn how social determinants of health, access to care, and infrastructure influence the health of defined groups. You also gain understanding of how community and professional stakeholders work across systems to improve health.
The multidisciplinary program features many modes of learning to enable and empower you. One is experiential learning, including your engagement as a citizen scientist, to better understand population health. The program provides training in biomedical informatics, economics, social determinants of health, program and community assessment, program planning and health care delivery. This education leaves you well equipped to enter a growing field.
In the program, you can choose a track tailored to your professional interests. This allows you to customize your learning by focusing on health care compliance, health education, environmental systems, health systems design and improvement, or health informatics.

Program learning outcomes identify what a student will learn or be able to do upon completion of their program. This program’s learning outcomes include the following:
- Locate informatics and knowledge management technology in ethical ways to summarize data and information relevant to population health.
- Explain the role that social determinants of health, as reflected in the diversity of individuals and groups (e.g. culture, language, health status, literacy), has on the nature of civil discourse and its influence of policies, programs, services, and the health of populations.
- Identify and examine health-related organizational structures and functions in a community and contribute to the population health evidence base.
With more than 300 Global Education program opportunities available, population health students are able to tailor their experience to their unique interests and skill sets. Whether in a foreign country, in the U.S. or online, students build communication skills, learn to adapt and persevere, and are exposed to research and internships across the world, increasing their professional network.
Multiple career opportunities exist for graduates with a degree in population health, depending on the areas of expertise that they developed via core training in population health and the track that they pursued. Those who pursued the biomedical information track, for example, are most qualified for positions that require working with a variety of datasets, while those who chose the health education specialist track are trained to work at the interface of health care and public health.
Specific job titles that currently exist for those trained in population health include:
- community health worker
- health care data analyst
- program coordinator
- population health analyst, coordinator or specialist
- population health practice liaison for population outreach
- research assistant
Example job titles and salaries listed below are not necessarily entry level, and students should take into consideration how years of experience and geographical location may affect pay scales. Some jobs also may require advanced degrees, certifications or state-specific licensure.

Program term definitions
Accelerated programs allow students the opportunity to expedite the completion of their degree.
Accelerated master's
These programs allow students to accelerate their studies to earn a bachelor's plus a master's degree in as few as five years (for some programs).
Each program has requirements students must meet to be eligible for consideration. Students typically receive approval to pursue the accelerated master's during the junior year of their bachelor's degree program. Interested students can learn about eligibility requirements and how to apply.
Concurrent degrees allow students to pursue their own personal or professional interests, earn two distinct degrees and receive two diplomas. To add a concurrent degree to your existing degree, work with your academic advisor.
Joint programs, or jointly conferred degrees, are offered by more than one college and provide opportunities for students to take advantage of the academic strengths of two academic units. Upon graduation, students are awarded one degree and one diploma conferred by two colleges.
