Education (Elementary Education), BEd degree description
The 90-credit Bachelor of Education program with a concentration in elementary education provides you a focused and efficient pathway as an aspiring K-8 teacher who wants to enter the classroom as soon as possible, even as it maintains the high standards of a traditional education degree. You'll receive a blend of rigorous coursework with scaffolded, hands-on classroom experiences that prepares you to design engaging lessons, manage classrooms effectively, and meet the needs of all learners. You develop a deep understanding of child development, learning theories and instructional design while acquiring strong content knowledge across English language arts, mathematics, science and social studies.
A central emphasis of the program is developing expertise in literacy instruction through research-based systematic phonics, language and literacy development and evidence-based reading practices. You, the teacher candidate, learn to apply differentiated strategies for reading assessment, intervention and remediation to support learners of varying ages and abilities, including students with dyslexia. Professional preparation begins early and continues throughout the program, as you spend increasing amounts of time in elementary classrooms under the guidance of experienced mentor teachers. These field experiences culminate in a full-time student teaching placement in which you assume full classroom responsibilities, applying your developed skills in instructional planning, classroom management and assessment.
This innovative degree equips you to create inclusive, supportive and engaging classroom environments that foster academic growth, confidence and a love of learning. With its timeline and reduced cost, the program provides you a high-quality, efficient pathway to enter the teaching profession and make an immediate impact.
You'll earn an institutional recommendation from ASU for Arizona teacher certification in K-8 Elementary Education, and an endorsement in Structured English Immersion, PreK-12, from the Arizona Department of Education. To teach in an Arizona public school, you must pass the appropriate Arizona educator exams: National Evaluation Series or Arizona Educator Proficiency Assessments.
ASU Sync
This program is also offered via ASU Sync for students at Arizona Western College and Gila Community College. ASU Sync enables you to attend live classes remotely via Zoom. Classes are designed to foster active collaboration and discussion in real time with faculty and peers. As an ASU Sync student, you must reside in Arizona throughout the duration of the program due to state regulations and student teaching placement requirements.
If you have F-1 or J-1 immigration status, you should speak with an advisor about other options to complete this program. Students with F-1 or J-1 immigration status are not permitted to complete courses via Sync.
Arizona Western College and Gila Community College students should apply to the West Valley campus and meet with an academic advisor once admitted to schedule classes via ASU Sync.

Explore expanded study opportunities
When you pursue concurrent degrees (also known as a “double major”), you earn two distinct degrees and receive two diplomas. Working with your academic advisor, you can create your own concurrent degree combination. Some combinations are not possible due to high levels of overlap in curriculum.
Because of climate change, geopolitical instability or economic factors, the United Nations and other institutions predict that migration is expected to increase globally for the foreseeable future. Learners will migrate to new communities. Increasingly, educators will be asked to meet the needs of students who speak languages other than English and who bring a variety of cultures into classrooms and learning environments. Education students can prepare for this reality by participating in Global Education programs, expanding their notion of normal schooling and deepening their understanding of how to foster inclusive and inspiring learning environments. Study abroad is possible in this program with careful planning in coordination with an academic advisor.

Frequently asked questions about degree programs
Accelerated programs allow students the opportunity to expedite the completion of their degree.
Accelerated master's
These programs allow students to accelerate their studies to earn a bachelor's plus a master's degree in as few as five years (for some programs).
Each program has requirements students must meet to be eligible for consideration. Students typically receive approval to pursue the accelerated master's during the junior year of their bachelor's degree program. Interested students can learn about eligibility requirements and how to apply.
Concurrent degrees allow students to pursue their own personal or professional interests, earn two distinct degrees and receive two diplomas. To add a concurrent degree to your existing degree, work with your academic advisor.
Joint programs, or jointly conferred degrees, are offered by more than one college and provide opportunities for students to take advantage of the academic strengths of two academic units. Upon graduation, students are awarded one degree and one diploma conferred by two colleges.
ASU adds new programs to Degree Search frequently. Come back often and look for the "New Programs" option.
ASU Online offers programs in an entirely online format with multiple enrollment sessions throughout the year. See https://asuonline.asu.edu/ for more information.
