Secondary Education degree description
The Bachelor of Arts in Education program in secondary education prepares you to educate learners in grades 6-12 in the content area of your choice.
You develop strong content knowledge, instructional competency and professional skills needed to lead successful classrooms in middle and high schools. You gain extensive experience integrating educational technology, and the program has a strong focus on teaching and learning practices that foster equitable access and outcomes for diverse secondary populations. You select one content area as your subject emphasis and complete at least 24 credit hours in that area. Content areas may vary depending on location and include biology, business, chemistry, earth and space sciences, economics, English, general science, geography, health, history, mathematics, physics, physical education, political science and American government, and some foreign languages.
Mary Lou Fulton College for Teaching and Learning Innovation has developed a team-based approach to teacher preparation, enabling you to participate in professional experiences --- internships and student teaching --- with a team of peers while receiving guidance and support from ASU faculty members and highly qualified certified teachers. Team-based professional experiences are designed to prepare you to work with mutually supportive colleagues to address the academic and social-emotional needs of learners. Clinically embedded courses and professional experiences provide you with multiple opportunities to apply knowledge learned in coursework to practice in the classroom.
You complete a series of internships before a semester-long, full-time student teaching experience with the support of a certified mentor teacher and ASU faculty.
You earn a bachelor's degree in secondary education and receive an institutional recommendation for teacher certification in Secondary Education, 6-12, as well as a structured English Immersion, P-12, endorsement through the Arizona Department of Education. To be eligible for secondary certification in Arizona, you must also earn a passing score on the professional knowledge exam offered through the National Evaluation Series or Arizona Educator Proficiency Assessments.
Format option
This program is also offered via ASU Sync. As a ASU Sync student, you attend live classes remotely via Zoom. Classes are designed to foster active collaboration and discussion in real time with faculty and peers. ASU Sync students must reside in Arizona throughout the duration of the program. If you have F-1 or J-1 immigration status, you should speak with an advisor about other options to complete this program. Students with F-1 or J-1 immigration status are not permitted to complete courses via Sync.
The BAE program in secondary education via ASU Sync is available for transfer students who reside in Arizona.
You have the opportunity to speak to an advisor about the content areas and modalities offered at ASU campuses in and outside Maricopa County.

The ASU Sync option is available only to transfer students residing in Arizona because of state regulations and student teaching placement requirements. Students should have completed an associate degree by the time they are enrolled at ASU. Students on F-1 or J-1 immigration status are not allowed to complete courses via Sync.
A current ASU student has no additional requirements for changing majors.

When you pursue concurrent degrees (also known as a “double major”), you earn two distinct degrees and receive two diplomas. Working with your academic advisor, you can create your own concurrent degree combination. Some combinations are not possible due to high levels of overlap in curriculum.

Accelerated programs allow students the opportunity to expedite the completion of their degree.
Accelerated master's
These programs allow students to accelerate their studies to earn a bachelor's plus a master's degree in as few as five years (for some programs).
Each program has requirements students must meet to be eligible for consideration. Students typically receive approval to pursue the accelerated master's during the junior year of their bachelor's degree program. Interested students can learn about eligibility requirements and how to apply.
Concurrent degrees allow students to pursue their own personal or professional interests, earn two distinct degrees and receive two diplomas. To add a concurrent degree to your existing degree, work with your academic advisor.
Joint programs, or jointly conferred degrees, are offered by more than one college and provide opportunities for students to take advantage of the academic strengths of two academic units. Upon graduation, students are awarded one degree and one diploma conferred by two colleges.
