Degree description
The Master of Science program in innovations in medical and patient care technologies, or IMPACT, is designed to deepen your expertise as an engineer in the rapidly evolving field of health care innovation. This program focuses on the entire biodesign process, equipping you with the skills to develop needs-based solutions and successfully implement innovations into applicable practice. You gain a comprehensive understanding of how to navigate the complexities of medical technology development, from concept to execution, preparing you to drive impactful advancements in health care.
Coursework is primarily delivered in person, providing you with valuable clinical experience and direct interaction with Mayo Clinic's renowned clinical providers. Throughout the program, you develop the ability to identify critical health care needs, assess which challenges are most feasible to address, and invent and implement solutions, all while understanding the regulatory and business frameworks that govern product development. You also have the opportunity to engage with local industry experts, Mayo Clinic faculty and leading biodesign educators, gaining insights that bridge theory with practical application.
You complete a clinical immersion, which enables you to pursue a credit-bearing certificate in biomedical innovation through Mayo Clinic.

Students complete 30 credit hours for this degree. They complete coursework leading up to the capstone culminating experience throughout the program in distinct phases: Clinical Innovation (Needs Assessment/Prototyping) and Biomedical Innovation (Product Development). During the Clinical Innovation II and III phases, the student works on their culminating experience, which involves prototyping, producing and implementing their product.

Applicants must fulfill the requirements of both the Graduate College and Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering. Applicants are eligible to apply to the program if they have earned a bachelor's or master's degree in biodesign, biomedical engineering, engineering, medical technologies or a related field from a regionally accredited institution. Applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 (scale is 4.00 = "A") in the last 60 hours of their first bachelor's degree program or a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 (scale is 4.00 = "A") in an applicable master's degree program. Applicants are required to submit: Additional Admission Information For the personal statement (no more than two pages), applicants should explain their professional goals in pursuing a master's degree, what they will contribute to the program and potential design team members, and other information relevant to their application. Applicants should also describe their educational background and how it will contribute to their success in the IMPACT program.
An applicant whose native language is not English must provide proof of English proficiency regardless of current residency.

Frequently asked questions about degree programs
Accelerated programs allow students the opportunity to expedite the completion of their degree.
Accelerated master's
These programs allow students to accelerate their studies to earn a bachelor's plus a master's degree in as few as five years (for some programs).
Each program has requirements students must meet to be eligible for consideration. Students typically receive approval to pursue the accelerated master's during the junior year of their bachelor's degree program. Interested students can learn about eligibility requirements and how to apply.
Concurrent degrees allow students to pursue their own personal or professional interests, earn two distinct degrees and receive two diplomas. To add a concurrent degree to your existing degree, work with your academic advisor.
Joint programs, or jointly conferred degrees, are offered by more than one college and provide opportunities for students to take advantage of the academic strengths of two academic units. Upon graduation, students are awarded one degree and one diploma conferred by two colleges.
