In the minor program in English, you gain the knowledge and skills to improve your writing and to enhance your ability to read and think analytically and become a critical consumer of media.
This program is delivered entirely online and serves as a complement to your chosen major as you pursue your ASU bachelor's degree online.
Why earn an English minor at ASU?
In this English minor, you'll dig into perspectives on themes such as the rhetoric of crisis management, contemporary approaches to studying literature and digital narratives. You'll also tap a robust Internships and Career Futures program, recognized for its effectiveness by U.S. News and World Report, with more than 300 internship partners across industry, government and nonprofit organizations. Among 2024-2025 participants, 92% who completed an internship said it led directly to a job, and you can build skills in critical analysis, written communication, public relations, digital content and more through both in-person and remote opportunities. Funding is available through the Department of English's Unpaid Internship Scholarships, Research Internships Awards and High Impact Internship Awards.
You're also encouraged to explore the Humanities Lab, where hands-on research tackles compelling social challenges. Each semester, it offers a series of interdisciplinary courses and experiences, open to both in-person and online students, so you can collaborate with others who are invested in making a difference.

The minor requires 18 credit hours. A "C" minimum is required for all courses in the minor, although students must maintain a 3.00 GPA in the post-baccalaureate certificate program.

The online minor in English consists of 18 credit hours, of which at least 12 credit hours must be upper division. A minimum of six upper-division credit hours must be taken from The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Frequently asked questions about degree programs
Accelerated programs allow students the opportunity to expedite the completion of their degree.
Accelerated master's
These programs allow students to accelerate their studies to earn a bachelor's plus a master's degree in as few as five years (for some programs).
Each program has requirements students must meet to be eligible for consideration. Students typically receive approval to pursue the accelerated master's during the junior year of their bachelor's degree program. Interested students can learn about eligibility requirements and how to apply.
Concurrent degrees allow students to pursue their own personal or professional interests, earn two distinct degrees and receive two diplomas. To add a concurrent degree to your existing degree, work with your academic advisor.
Joint programs, or jointly conferred degrees, are offered by more than one college and provide opportunities for students to take advantage of the academic strengths of two academic units. Upon graduation, students are awarded one degree and one diploma conferred by two colleges.
