Portuguese minor description
In the minor in Portuguese, you gain an understanding of the language, literature and cultures of Portuguese-speaking countries.
Portuguese is the official language of Portugal, Brazil, Mozambique, Angola, Guinea-Bissau, East Timor, Equatorial Guinea, Macau, Cape Verde, and São Tomé and Príncipe. It's also an official language of the African Union and the European Union. It's the sixth-most-spoken language in the world, and the second-most-spoken Romance language (second to Spanish).
Why earn a Portuguese minor at ASU?
The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences houses one of the nation's most comprehensive language and culture schools, and this minor reflects that depth. You learn to use Portuguese in authentic contexts such as ordering at a restaurant, conducting job interviews, reading current news and expressing substantiated opinions. Faculty integrate language instruction with culture, history, music, film and social issues so you develop linguistic and cultural proficiency together. You can also find approved study abroad opportunities in Brazil and cultural activities that include conversations with native speakers integrated into your classes.
You have access to distinctive courses such as Consumer Culture in Latin America, Food and Culture in Latin America, Diplomacy Lab - Brazil, and Brazilian Society through Music. In these classes, you complete semester-long projects that share your knowledge with wider audiences through projects such as podcast episodes, annotated Spotify playlists and reports for governmental agencies. Some courses are offered through ASU's Humanities Lab.
Faculty bring expertise in linguistics, culture and history and one faculty member holds certification in Oral Proficiency Interviews from the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. This certification is held by a limited number of Portuguese faculty in the United States and reflects current standards in language teaching.
If you already speak Spanish, you can take advantage of accelerated Portuguese options.

You can connect with peers and deepen your engagement through the Brazilian Student Association Club and the SILC Attachés Club. You also have opportunities to attend cultural events, guest speaker presentations and international programming hosted by the School of International Letters and Cultures.

The minor requires 18 credit hours. A "C" minimum is required for all courses in the minor, although students must maintain a 3.00 GPA in the post-baccalaureate certificate program.

Certain major and minor combinations may be deemed inappropriate by the college or department of either the major program or the minor. Students in this minor program have the opportunity to attend the following summer study abroad program through the Global Education Office: UArizona: Portuguese in Brazil.
This program is recommended and approved by the School of International Letters and Cultures to give students a global experience studying the language and culture of Brazil.
- This is an ASU-authorized summer program.
- Students can advance their Portuguese language skills during this program in the vibrant coastal city of Salavdor, in northeastern Brazil.
- In addition to taking courses taught by local Brazilian faculty, students live with a host family to experience Brazilian culture firsthand and to further develop their Portuguese skills.
- Common excursions during the program include trips to Jericoacoara and Canoa Quebrada, two beautiful beach towns in the state of Cear.
- This program is open to students of any major; based on course offerings, it is ideal for students seeking courses in the Portuguese language.
- Completion of POR 102 is a program prerequisite.

Frequently asked questions about degree programs
Accelerated programs allow students the opportunity to expedite the completion of their degree.
Accelerated master's
These programs allow students to accelerate their studies to earn a bachelor's plus a master's degree in as few as five years (for some programs).
Each program has requirements students must meet to be eligible for consideration. Students typically receive approval to pursue the accelerated master's during the junior year of their bachelor's degree program. Interested students can learn about eligibility requirements and how to apply.
Concurrent degrees allow students to pursue their own personal or professional interests, earn two distinct degrees and receive two diplomas. To add a concurrent degree to your existing degree, work with your academic advisor.
Joint programs, or jointly conferred degrees, are offered by more than one college and provide opportunities for students to take advantage of the academic strengths of two academic units. Upon graduation, students are awarded one degree and one diploma conferred by two colleges.
