When you understand the crucial role of religion in both conflict and peace, you gain a broad knowledge of human division and unity. This understanding and the skills you gain in the program will be assets as you pursue your choice of career.
The religion, conflict and peace certificate program has three core components: regional, political and cultural.
The regional component provides you with specific regional knowledge of how religion has been implicated in human conflict. Required coursework in at least two different regions fosters a comparative understanding of the dynamics of religion and conflict in historical and global contexts.
The political component explores how religion influences or is influenced by matters of state, law, government or other dimensions of political life.
The cultural component provides you with an understanding of how religion operates as a powerful force that impacts and intersects with expressions of human identity, thought and culture.

The certificate in Religion, Conflict and Peace requires a minimum of 18 credit hours. At least 12 credit hours must be completed in upper-division coursework. At least six upper-division hours in the certificate must be completed in courses offered by The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. When selecting courses, the college offering the course can be identified by viewing the course details in Class Search. A grade of "C" (2.00 on a 4.00 scale) or higher is required for each course used to fulfill a certificate requirement. |

Of the 18 credit hours for the certificate, at least six credit hours must be fulfilled with courses from the humanities and at least three credit hours from the social sciences.

When choosing courses within the certificate, complete six credit hours from the following subject areas to fulfill the humanities requirement: ARB, CEL, CHI, FMS, GER, HEB, HST, IAS, JST, PAX, PHI, REL, or SLC.

A student pursuing an undergraduate certificate must be enrolled as a degree-seeking student at ASU. Undergraduate certificates are not awarded before the completion of an undergraduate degree. A student who already holds an undergraduate degree may pursue an undergraduate certificate as a nondegree-seeking graduate student.
Graduates can become more marketable and advance their career options when they have an undergraduate certificate. The certificate in religion, conflict and peace complements their major program of study with specialized knowledge and enables them to demonstrate broad intellectual curiosity and skills.
Graduates who complete this certificate program often decide to pursue employment in journalism, law, policy work, diplomacy, the military, public advocacy, publishing, education, ministry and other fields in which an enhanced understanding of religion and conflict is increasingly vital. Advanced degrees or certifications may be required for academic or clinical positions.

Program term definitions
Accelerated programs allow students the opportunity to expedite the completion of their degree.
Accelerated master's
These programs allow students to accelerate their studies to earn a bachelor's plus a master's degree in as few as five years (for some programs).
Each program has requirements students must meet to be eligible for consideration. Students typically receive approval to pursue the accelerated master's during the junior year of their bachelor's degree program. Interested students can learn about eligibility requirements and how to apply.
Concurrent degrees allow students to pursue their own personal or professional interests, earn two distinct degrees and receive two diplomas. To add a concurrent degree to your existing degree, work with your academic advisor.
Joint programs, or jointly conferred degrees, are offered by more than one college and provide opportunities for students to take advantage of the academic strengths of two academic units. Upon graduation, students are awarded one degree and one diploma conferred by two colleges.
