Description

The emergency management essentials certificate program equips you with the skills and knowledge to prepare for, respond to and recover from a wide variety of emergencies and disasters. This program covers the essential principles of emergency management, including risk assessment, disaster preparedness, response coordination and recovery planning. You gain practical experience in managing crises, coordinating with public safety agencies, and developing effective emergency plans to mitigate risks and protect communities.

The program is designed for you, whether you are pursuing a career in emergency management, public safety or disaster response; you are a community leader or government official looking to enhance your crisis management capabilities; you are a public or private sector employee responsible for organizational emergency preparedness and risk management; or you come from the various fields interested in understanding the strategies and systems needed to manage emergencies and protect communities.

Enrollment requirements

This certificate is available to current ASU students, as well as students not currently enrolled at ASU in a degree program.

For admission to the university to pursue this certificate, students must apply to the university and meet university admission requirements. Students not currently attending ASU who wish to pursue the certificate should contact an academic advisor in Watts College of Public Service and Community Solutions at spa@asu.edu or 602-496-1658 for admission procedures.

Current degree-seeking ASU students can request to add the certificate via the "Add a Certificate" button.

Program learning outcomes

Program learning outcomes identify what a student will learn or be able to do upon completion of their program. This program’s learning outcomes include the following:

  • Understand emergency management and homeland security organizations.
  • Draw connections between emerging risks and vulnerabilities in society related to emergency management challenges.
Career opportunities

Graduates possess the knowledge and skills required for entry-level positions in the public sector at the local, state and federal levels, as well as for other opportunities in the commercial and nonprofit sectors. Graduates will have a significant advantage in the coming hiring boom within the field in response to the upcoming wave of retirees in the public sector and increasing demand for public services, especially at the federal level. For those who already possess relevant knowledge and experience, the program provides complementary knowledge valuable for promotion in the field. Graduates also may choose to further their education in graduate programs in emergency management, public policy, law or public administration.

Program term definitions

Accelerated programs allow students the opportunity to expedite the completion of their degree.

Accelerated master's

These programs allow students to accelerate their studies to earn a bachelor's plus a master's degree in as few as five years (for some programs).

Each program has requirements students must meet to be eligible for consideration. Students typically receive approval to pursue the accelerated master's during the junior year of their bachelor's degree program. Interested students can learn about eligibility requirements and how to apply.

Concurrent degrees allow students to pursue their own personal or professional interests, earn two distinct degrees and receive two diplomas. To add a concurrent degree to your existing degree, work with your academic advisor.

Joint programs, or jointly conferred degrees, are offered by more than one college and provide opportunities for students to take advantage of the academic strengths of two academic units. Upon graduation, students are awarded one degree and one diploma conferred by two colleges.
