Elementary Education undergraduate certificate description

In the certificate program in elementary education, you prepare to work with children in grades K-8 in an educational setting.

This certificate program can be added only to the following majors, granting you eligibility for dual teaching certificates when you complete your Bachelor of Arts in Education program:

  • BAE in secondary education
  • BAE in special education

You engage in innovative coursework grounded in theory-based strategies and evidence-based practices for teaching. Coursework is designed to support the development of instructional competencies, professional skills, content knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge in mathematics, science, English language arts and social studies.

This program has a strong focus on teaching and learning practices that foster equitable access and outcomes for culturally and linguistically diverse students, and learners with special needs and exceptionalities.

When you add this certificate to a bachelor's degree listed above, you're eligible to earn an institutional recommendation from ASU for Arizona teacher certification in Elementary Education, K-8, as recognized by the Arizona Department of Education. To teach in an Arizona public school, you must pass the appropriate Arizona educator exams: National Evaluation Series or Arizona Educator Proficiency Assessments.

This program is also offered via ASU Sync. ASU Sync enables you to attend live classes remotely via Zoom. Classes are designed to foster active collaboration and discussion in real time with faculty and peers. As an ASU Sync student, you must reside in Arizona throughout the duration of the program. If you have F-1 or J-1 immigration status, you're not permitted to complete courses via Sync and should speak with an advisor about other options to complete this program.

Enrollment requirements

This certificate is open only to students majoring in special education or secondary education undergraduate teacher preparation programs in the Mary Lou Fulton College for Teaching and Learning Innovation.

Students are required to have a valid Arizona DPS Identity Verified Prints fingerprint clearance card.

A GPA of 2.00 is required for continued good standing. Students should contact MLFC for more information.

A student pursuing an undergraduate certificate must be enrolled as a degree-seeking student at ASU. Undergraduate certificates are not awarded before the completion of an undergraduate degree. A student who already holds an undergraduate degree may pursue an undergraduate certificate as a nondegree-seeking graduate student but may not be eligible for an institutional recommendation for Arizona teaching licensure without additional preparation beyond the certificate.

Frequently asked questions about degree programs

Accelerated programs allow students the opportunity to expedite the completion of their degree.

Accelerated master's

These programs allow students to accelerate their studies to earn a bachelor's plus a master's degree in as few as five years (for some programs).

Each program has requirements students must meet to be eligible for consideration. Students typically receive approval to pursue the accelerated master's during the junior year of their bachelor's degree program. Interested students can learn about eligibility requirements and how to apply.

Concurrent degrees allow students to pursue their own personal or professional interests, earn two distinct degrees and receive two diplomas. To add a concurrent degree to your existing degree, work with your academic advisor.

Joint programs, or jointly conferred degrees, are offered by more than one college and provide opportunities for students to take advantage of the academic strengths of two academic units. Upon graduation, students are awarded one degree and one diploma conferred by two colleges.
